I am simply horrified…I saw an article on The Huffington Post today about a segment on the CBS Early Show regarding the percentage of young women – and I do mean YOUNG – getting Botox treatments. The link to the video and article are here, but I’ll warn you, it’s not easy to hear.
The report indicates that nearly 27% of the people getting Botox shots are under the age of 30, and a few are under the age of 18, which is outside of the recommendations approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The segment on The Early Show has a generally positive tone – no scare tactics here, though there is a good discussion of warning signs and potential side effects.
I have never considered getting Botox – I am blessed with a face that shows my age, yes, but not in such a way that I’m ashamed of it. I don’t believe ANY woman should be ashamed of the face she sees in the mirror each day – especially when the face looking back at her is under 30 years old! For any practitioner to inject Botox into an under-18 year old face, unless that person is dealing with some unusual medical condition, is to me, irresponsible at best and criminal at worst.
Botox is a very individual decision – I have read stories of women in my age range (mid 40’s) who make an educated decision to use the product and do so for their own well-thought-out reasons. I cannot condone the use of the product in someone under 30 who is otherwise in good health and does not show extreme signs of aging. My focus is, and always had been, to encourage women to Love their Reflection – no matter what their age!
Sound off – let me know how YOU feel about this article and about young women under 30 getting Botox shots…and if you personally made the decision to get Botox, at what age did you start? Why did you think it was appropriate for you? No recriminations here – I’m truly trying to understand…
